ALIGNING MATH OBJECTIVES GRADES K-5 = PROGRESSIONS
Prior to the development of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics, a series of documents produced by writers of the Common Core described specific topic/concept across a number of grade bands. These draft learning progression documents were informed by research on children’s cognitive development and by the logical structure of mathematics. They formed the foundation for the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics. They are the math progressions, which align the math objectives to different grade levels. Elementary Math progressions concentrate on building Number Sense, Algebraic Foundations, Cardinal Operations and Geometry.
Every elementary teacher should know each of the progressions in order to lesson plan with an end in mind (Backwards planning). |
