ALIGNING SECONDARY MATH OBJECTIVES = PROGRESSIONS
The six secondary different progressions all in one place. (Est. 2011)
Prior to the development of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics, a series of documents were produced by writers of the Common Core that described specific topics and concepts across grade bands. These draft learning progression documents were informed by research on children’s cognitive development and by the logical structure of mathematics. They formed the foundation for the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics. They are the math progressions, which align the math objectives to different grade levels. Secondary Math progressions concentrate on enhancing Number Sense to a higher level of understanding than elementary, using alongside the concepts of Functions, Algebra, Statistics and Probability (and embedding Geometry). The MODELING progression represents the empirical situations of analyzing and representing math at different levels from Middle School to High School, the definition of Modeling evolves. Known mathematician and fellow teacher Dan Meyer illustrates here what common core modeling truly means. Many more of his videos and lectures are available online and on the web. Every secondary teacher should be familiar with the elementary progressions and know thoroughly each of the 6 secondary progressions in order to lesson plan with the end in mind (Backwards planning). |
